Frequently asked questions
Is anti-reflective coating worth it?
For most wearers, yes. The reduction in glare from screens and headlights is noticeable from day one, and the improvement in lens appearance — particularly in photographs and on video calls — is significant. MAR coating is included as standard on 1.60 index and above, so for most prescription wearers it comes at no additional cost.
What is the difference between anti-reflective and anti-scratch coating?
Anti-reflective (MAR) coating reduces glare by minimising the amount of light that reflects off the lens surface. Anti-scratch coating is a hardened surface layer that protects against physical abrasion. They serve different purposes and can be combined — anti-scratch is applied to the lens first, with the anti-reflective coating applied on top.
Why does my lens have a faint green or blue tint?
This is the signature of a quality anti-reflective coating and is completely normal. The coloured residual reflection is a result of the optical layers cancelling out other wavelengths of light. It indicates the coating is working correctly and does not affect your vision.
Does MAR coating make lenses harder to clean?
MAR coated lenses can show smudges and fingerprints more visibly than uncoated lenses, because the coating reduces reflections that would otherwise mask them. Cleaning with a microfibre cloth and lens solution removes smudges quickly and easily. Many modern MAR coatings also include a hydrophobic layer that repels water and oils, making them easier to keep clean.
Is MAR coating available on varifocal and bifocal lenses?
Yes. Anti-reflective coating is available on all lens types — single vision, varifocal (all four packages), bifocal and non-prescription. It is included as standard on 1.60, 1.67 and 1.74 index lenses and available as an upgrade on 1.50 index across all lens types.
