Understanding 1.50
What you need to know
What is a 1.50 index lens?
The index number refers to how efficiently a lens bends light. 1.50 is the standard index — the starting point for most prescription lenses. It is well-established, reliable and suited to the majority of everyday prescriptions.
Who is it for?
1.50 index lenses are ideal for anyone with a low prescription, typically up to ±2.00. If you are new to glasses or have a mild prescription, this is likely the lens your optician has been prescribing you already.
What prescription does it suit?
Best suited to prescriptions with SPH and CYL values up to ±2.00. If your prescription is higher, a 1.60 or above will produce a noticeably thinner and lighter result.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is 1.50 index the right lens for me?
If your prescription has SPH and CYL values within ±2.00, 1.50 is a perfectly suitable choice. It is the standard lens index and works well for the majority of low to mild prescriptions. If your values are higher, a thinner index will give a better result. What coatings come with 1.50 index lenses?
Anti-scratch coating is included as standard with all our 1.50 index lenses. You can upgrade to anti-reflective (MAR) coating, add a blue light filter, a sunglass tint, or transition lenses at the checkout stage. Can I get varifocal lenses in 1.50 index?
Yes. 1.50 index is available across all our lens types — single vision, varifocal and bifocal. Select your lens type first, then choose 1.50 at the index selection step. What is the difference between 1.50 and 1.60 index?
1.60 index lenses are thinner and lighter than 1.50 for the same prescription. For prescriptions within ±2.00 the difference is minimal, but above ±2.00 the 1.60 will produce a noticeably slimmer lens profile. The 1.60 also includes anti-reflective coating as standard.
